Mark Herzlich beats the odds, makes Giants' roster

Here is a story anyone can get behind.

Mark Herzlich has made it through final cuts with the New York Giants.

The cancer survivor, who was an undrafted free agent, beat the odds although it wasn’t a huge surprise. Reports were he performed well in training camp and preseason. It is a little surprising the Giants have four rookie linebackers on the 53-man roster.

Herzlich, 24, was the ACC defensive player of the year at Boston College before his career was put on hold to battle cancer.

Herzlich didn't bat an eye the whole camp,” Giants coach Tom Coughlin said, according to Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News. "Physically he did everything you asked and more. I saw him improve literally week by week. He can play multiple positions. He's very smart. He does an outstanding job on special teams. He's told one time and he goes and does it.

"He deserves it."
