Mark Herzlich getting ready to pick his team
Soon, it’s going to be Mark Herzlich’s turn to pick and choose when it comes to the NFL.
The Boston College linebacker, who has a terrific story after beating a form of bone cancer after being named the ACC defensive player of the year in 2008, is going to navigate free agency once the NFL gets going.
Herzlich figured to be selected in the April draft but when he wasn’t he set out to make himself a better player. Now, he tells Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee that the 49ers are on his short list of teams he’ll consider signing with.
“You look at a lot of teams and say, 'Ok, these guys might need an outside linebacker. It might be a good fit,'" Herzlich said. "But then free agency could come about and then they sign a few veteran outside linebackers and all of sudden it's not a good fit anymore.”
Herzlich has been training in Florida through the summer and he’s ready to go. He has more than a sports story. It’s a human interest story and one worth following once he finds a team and gets a shot to prove himself and make a roster.
