Matt Leinart sticks in Arizona, for now

For the time being, meaning at least one more day, the Arizona Cardinals are going to carry four quarterbacks.

Perhaps that means the team is still hopeful a trade opportunity will come together for Matt Leinart. He’s on the roster behind starter Derek Anderson and with rookies Max Hall and John Skelton, both of whom impressed during training camp and preseason.

Will the Cardinals roll into the regular season with four quarterbacks? It’s certainly possible. No one would feel real secure about Hall or Skelton being in the No. 2 role in the regular season. They’re viewed as developmental players for the future.

But the Cardinals did get around to announcing 16 cuts today, along with other moves. The team placed linebacker Gerald Hayes on the physically unable to perform list as he recovers from back surgery and linebacker Mark Washington (foot) was waived/injured.

The cuts: Linebacker Stevie Baggs, tight end Anthony Becht, linebacker Monty Beisel, linebacker Cody Brown, defensive end Jeremy Clark, defensive end John Fletcher, wide receiver Ed Gant, guard Herman Johnson, wide receiver Mike Jones, wide receiver Onrea Jones, cornerback Justin Miller, guard Jonathan Palmer, guard Tom Pestock, fullback Charles Scott and wide receiver Isaiah Williams.

The Cardinals must make three more roster moves to reach 53 by Saturday at 6 p.m. Maybe one will involve Leinart.
