Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford has undergone surgery on his right shoulder today, news first reported by Tom “Killer” Kowalski of MLive.com.

Stafford suffered two injuries to his right shoulder during the season, first in the opener against the Chicago Bears and then against the New York Hets. Per Kowalski, Dr. James Andrews repaired the AC joint and also shaved the clavicle.

Stafford should be 100 percent by May, but that means he will not be ready for the beginning of the team’s offseason program in March. However, the dark labor cloud hanging over the league could very well push back the start of that. Perhaps by quite a bit of time. So, Stafford stands a good chance of missing nothing.

The injury to Stafford’s shoulder would have healed over time, but Andrews determined surgery would be a better approach. Now, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 draft needs to stay on the field for an entire season to shake a label that he is brittle and injury prone.
