McElroy hid concussion from Jets
Greg McElroy apparently hid his concussion from the New York Jets coaching staff until he experienced headaches during a weightlifting session Thursday morning, according to ESPNNewYork.com.
While the coaching staff didn't know, some of McElroy's teammates did know that the quarterback, who was sacked 11 times by the San Diego Chargers in his first start, had concussion symptoms.
He came to my room and we talked about it," receiver Clyde Gates said. "He was hurting real bad. I was like, 'Bro, I know, I've been down that road already. I'm just saying you can't try to tough it out cause you going to end up hurting yourself. You've got to let everybody know how you really feel.' "
Left guard Matt Slauson, who admitted to hiding concussions of his own in the past, was also aware of McElroy's condition.
"He definitely has that (warrior) mentality, but it got to the point where it was scaring him," Slauson said.
For McElroy, it probably wasn't the best move he has made, but given the small window of two games in which he had to prove himself to the Jets coaches, that probably at least partially explains why he took the risk.
