Michael Crabtree wonders who 49ers quarterback is
Maybe when the San Francisco 49ers can finally get around to signing Alex Smith, Michael Crabtree will recognize him as the team’s quarterback.
It’s been Smith who has taken the lead on team workouts. He’s done so with a playbook that coach Jim Harbaugh has already given him. Yes, typically the contract comes before the playbook, but it’s an offseason like no other and strange things are happening.
It sure was strange when Crabtree seemed somewhat confused as to who the quarterback was. Reporters caught up with the team’s former first-round draft pick on Monday. Crabtree has yet to work out with Smith this offseason.
According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, Crabtree was asked if he thought chemistry could be developed by working with the quarterback.
“Who's the quarterback?” Crabtree said.
Barrows responded Smith.
“He's the quarterback?” Crabtree said. “I'm just asking.”
Apparently, Smith isn’t the contract in Crabtree’s universe. Not now anyway.
“Whoever the quarterback is I'm gonna do my job. I'm going to do the best I can to get whatever he needs. You know what I'm saying?” Crabtree said. “That's just how it's going to be. I'm not one-sided. I'm for whoever's the quarterback. It's just how I've been. Everybody knows that.”
Then, Crabtree was asked if it looks like all signs point to Smith quarterbacking the 49ers this season and helping second-round draft pick Colin Kaepernick develop.
“I wish I could tell you that,” Crabtree said. “I know that you're all scratching at it. I wish I could tell you who is going to be the quarterback. I don't know. I don't know. Whoever the quarterback is, I'm 100 percent down with it and I'm ready to go. That's it.”
This will be interesting to track, especially after the 49ers sign Smith.
