Michael Sam improves numbers at Pro Day workout

Missouri defensive end Michael Sam improved his workout numbers considerably at his campus Pro Day workout following a sluggish NFL scouting combine perofrmance.

Sam ran the 40-yard dash in 4.72 seconds Thursday after clocking a 4.91 at the combine.

He upgraded his vertical leap to 30 inchs after a 25-inch showing at the combine.

He also bench pressed 225 pounds 19 times after doing 17 reps at the combine.

Sam strained his hamstring and didn't do a second 40-yard dash and rendered him unable to do the three-cone, short shuttle and standing broad jump.

Sam was the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Year and an All-American selection last season.

Sam's draft stock remains in question because he's not regarded as having linebacker skills and he lacks size for a defensive end at 6-foot-2, 256 pounds.

Sam is poised to become the first openly gay NFL player.

At the combine, the Texas native said he hopes that he'll eventually be known as Michael Sam, the football player, not as Michael Sam, the gay football player.
