Michael Vick reaches out to Cam Newton with advice
Cam Newton is under the microscope but there are plenty of folks out there rooting for the Carolina Panthers quarterback.
He’s preparing for his NFL debut Sunday at Arizona, and he’s doing so now with some advice he received from Michael Vick.
According to Ron Green of the Charlotte Obserber, Newton was preparing for last Thursday’s preseason finale when Vick called him out of the blue.
“He was just watching a couple games and was giving me what he thought that I need to do, as far as what I'm capable of doing," Newton said.
"He's been through my situation. His situation is not mine right now. Obviously, he's a person that I idolize. Whatever he says right now is golden."
Newton wouldn’t say precisely what wisdom Vick imparted on him, but everyone knows the Heisman Trophy winner from a year ago is in a challenging position. Green cites Elias Ports Bureau for the statistic that only four rookie quarterbacks have won a road game on opening weekend since 1970. The last to do the trick? Mark Sanchez in 2009.
"Slowly but surely I'm feeling comfortable in this offense," Newton said. "It's one less thing I have to think about each articular practice, knowing what my reads are, where I'm hot, where I have to slide the line to. I feel like if I can get that one hundred percent through this offense, watch out."
