Mike McCarthy backing his kicker Mason Crosby, for now

Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy is standing behind his kicker.

McCarthy opened his postgame remarks Sunday at Ford Field after a 24-20 victory over the Detroit Lions by talking about Crosby, who was made only six of his last 13 attempts.

Crosby was wide left from 50 yards and 38 yards in the win but did connect on a 39-yarder with 19 seconds remaining. He also missed from 50 yards in the first half on a kick that didn’t count as the Lions called timeout just before the snap.

I’ll address the field goal situation,” McCarthy said, according to Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. “Mason’s got to put the ball through the uprights. That’s something that we’ve got to do a better job of. I thought Mason had a very good week of work; didn’t hit it today the way he needs to hit it, but we’ll continue with Mason. We will not blink as far as our commitment to him.”

They might not blink now but if Crosby continues to struggle, they will have to blink soon. He was kicking in perfect indoor conditions at Ford Field. The Packers signed Crosby to a big extension in 2011 with a $3 million signing bonus. He’ll be counting his money elsewhere soon if he doesn’t start performing more consistently.
