Mike McCarthy true to his word, will stick with Mason Crosby

Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy is a man of his word.

On Sunday, after kicker Mason Crosby missed two field goals in a 21-13 victory over the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field, McCarthy declared the team would stick with the struggling performer.

McCarthy is backing that up as the Packers are not making a roster move for a kicker this week. This, despite serious struggles by Crosby, who was wide right from 43 yards and then banged a 42-yard try off the left upright.

Crosby now has 12 misses on the season and is 17 for 29.

Mason will be our kicker and that's my focus as we go to Tennessee,” McCarthy said on Monday, according to Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “Evaluation of everybody is an ongoing process as you prepare to win each game. Definitely no one's happy with the number of kicks that Mason has missed. As we stand here today on who's going to line up and kick, it's Mason Crosby. I don't know how to continue to answer this question.”

The gamble, of course, is that Crosby will turn it around before the Packers enter the playoffs. The last thing the team can afford is a faulty kicker when playoff games are on the line and because of Crosby’s struggles, the Packers elected to go for it on fourth down once during the Bears’ game.

Crosby is 8 for 10 in his career during the postseason.

"The direction right now," McCarthy said, "is we're sticking with Mason Crosby as our kicker."

If Crosby struggles in the next two weeks, maybe McCarthy will rethink his plan.
