Mike Smith extension top order of business in Falcons' offseason

Mike Smith, one of the leading candidates for Coach of the Year honors this season, is expected to receive a contract extension from the Atlanta Falcons early in the offseason.

According to D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal Constitution, a new pact for Smith will be a top priority at the start of the offseason although there have not been any discussions to this point.

"My focus right now is solely on (Sunday’s opponent) the Carolina Panthers," Smith said after practice Friday, per the report.

Smith has guided the Falcons to their third consecutive winning season. His original contract was for four years and worth between $8 million and $10 million. The Falcons can clinch the No. 1 seed in the NFC playoffs with a win over the Panthers.
