Minnesota legislature adjourns without a stadium deal

The Minnesota state legislature adjourned last night without finalizing a measure to support a new stadium for the Vikings.

It marks the second straight year lawmakers have failed to get a bill done to ensure the Vikings remain in the land of 10,000 lakes for decades to come.

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, road improvement obstacles remain in place for a proposed stadium in Arden Hills. There have been different estimates thrown around, but the project was short more than $130 million to get the deal done there and complete necessary roadwork. Per the report there is also “multiple problems with proposed legislative language” that has been submitted.

The best hope now for the Vikings is that the matter moves to a special legislative session. That’s not a done deal, though.

“It is of course possible if, there is a special session, for this issue to be before us,” Rep. Morrie Lanning told the Star Tribune. “But as I’ve said all along, I’m not going to move forward with the bill until we have a (overall state) budget resolution in hand.”

So, there stands a good chance the Vikings will be bidding for a new stadium next winter. At that point, their lease at the Metrodome will have expired.
