More football at Wrigley Field could be in the works
Sure, both teams had to use the same end zone because officials deemed the field unsafe, but the Northwestern-Illinois football game at Wrigley Field was such a hit last fall that the Wildcats are looking into the possibility of doing it on an annual basis.
Teddy Greenstein of the Chicago Tribune reports that Northwestern officials have already held discussions with the Chicago Cubs about the possibility.
Nothing can happen though until the iconic ballpark is renovated. When and if that happens is anyone’s best guess as we enter Year 2 of ownership by the Ricketts family. There needs to be space for a 100-yard field.
The day before the game last November, the field was deemed unsafe because in the east end zone there was one foot between the back line of the end zone and the padded right-field wall of the baseball stadium. That created obvious safety concerns.
Nothing is imminent but it is something to keep an eye on. Surely, running back Mikel Leshoure would love to play there again. The Illini running back ran for 330 yards in Illinois’ 48-27 victory.
