More mature Steve Smith emerges in Carolina

Before Steve Smith broke his arm playing flag football, he broke it playing against the New York Giants in Week 16 last season.

It was in training camp that Smith said he would go after the player that injured him – Giants safety Michael Johnson.

“I’m going after him,” he told

On a conference call with New York media on Wednesday, Smith sang a different tune.

“What I said in the summer was shallow, ignorant, immature and really no need,” Smith said, according to the Newark Star-Ledger. “I don’t need to be that way and I’m not going to be that way to my opponents anymore.

“I know a lot of guys do respect my game and I have to respect them and look at my opponent as really what they’re doing, which is taking an opportunity to make a living and put food on the table.”

No word yet on if he will go after the flag football player that he’s cast blame on for that broken arm.
