NaVorro Bowman has surgery on knee

One of the more gruesome images from the postseason came when 49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman's knee bent back the opposite way it should in the NFC Championship against Seattle.

Yet while Bowman could clearly feel ligaments tearing in his knee, he clutched onto a ball he thought he had just recovered for his team.

As it turned out, Bowman tore his ACL and MCL, and game officials incorrectly kept the ball with the Seahawks (though Seattle failed to convert that drive for a score). But with the season now behind him and an upcoming offseason rehabilitation schedule ahead, Bowman took the first step and announced on twitter that he was having surgery.

Dr. James Andrews is performing the procedure in Florida.

Bowman made a name for himself as one of San Francisco's standout defenders this season. He finished the regular season with 145 combined tackles, five sacks, four forced fumbles and two interceptions.
