New Meadowlands Stadium close to naming rights deal

Soon, the New York Giants and Jets might have a new name for their home.

Terry Lefton of Sports Business Journal reports that MetLife is in “advanced discussions” with New Meadowlands Stadium about a naming-right deal that could be worth between $17 million and $18 million a year.

While that is a long way off from the $30 million that was initially targeted before the building was opened, it would represent a huge deal for the stadium and clubs. MetLife already has a cornerstone deal at New Meadowlands Stadium that costs about $7 million annually.

Three years ago, before the stadium opened, the German insurance carrier Allianz was close to a naming-right deal but it fell through when the company’s close ties to Nazi Germany were examined.

In the meantime, New Meadowlands Stadium and Cowboys Stadium have been seeking a major corporate sponsor. Looks like one of them could have a new name before long.
