NFC South still up for grabs

The NFC South's situation this year should force the NFL to reconsider its playoff formula.

With the Falcons losing 27-20 to the Steelers, they now drop to 5-9 for the season. The Panthers, conversely, picked up a win with Derek Anderson starting at quarterback and are now 5-8-1. The Panthers are technically in first place at the moment with the 5-8 Saints set to take on the Beats Monday night.

A win over the Bears would put New Orleans in first place. A loss and the Panthers will remain in that spot.

The Falcons and Panthers are guaranteed to finish the season with losing records. One more loss for New Orleans and they're guaranteed a losing record as well.

As a result, a less-than-deserving team will reach the postseason and get a home game. It's possible a 10-win team is left out of the playoffs, which would be ridiculous. Maybe the NFL should institute a rule where if you're a division winner with a sub-.500 record that the division goes with a third Wild Card team instead.
