NFL considering expanding playoffs to 14 or 16 teams

The NFL is kicking around the idea of expanding the playoffs to a format that would include 14 or 16 teams.

The current 12-team format was adopted in 1990 and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said after a special owners meeting today in Dallas that the league would consider expanding the postseason.

“Of course, something that we discussed in the past is expanded playoffs. That is something that we teed up today. We will probably be looking at it with the committee over the next several months. Right now, we are at 12 teams, obviously. We will look at probably 14 or 16. The committee will be looking at that.”

Why? Goodell didn’t say but you can bet the bottom line is money. Perhaps the league will consider growing the postseason in a system where it can expand the league with a franchise in Los Angeles and perhaps somewhere else? It’s interesting.

Personally, we like the format the way it is and don’t like the idea of 9-7 and 8-8 teams being rewarded with playoff trips. But change is inevitable.
