NFL investigation begins in Miami

NFL-appointed investigator Ted Wells began questioning members of the Miami Dolphins staff on Monday as part of his look into workplace issues that led to offensive tackle Jonathan Martin leaving the team three weeks ago.

Wells met with Martin in New York on Friday, spending seven hours discussing numerous issues. Among the issues was Martin’s relationship with suspended guard Richie Incognito and the conduct of other players.

While one report indicated that Martin still considers Incognito his friend, a litany of issues have come up around that, such as how Incognito spoke to Martin. Incognito has acknowledged that he left a voicemail message with Martin in which he used the “N” word to describe Martin. However, Incognito explained that such language, which unacceptable, was part of how players talked to each other in the Dolphins locker room.

Wells issued a statement Monday asking that members of the Dolphins team avoid commenting on the process.

“We look forward to meeting with Dolphins players, coaches and staff in order to get the facts and prepare a thorough and fair report. The Dolphins organization has been very helpful in arranging the interviews and urging their personnel to cooperate with the investigation. We have asked all Dolphins personnel to respect the process and avoid commenting on the investigation,” Wells said.
