NFL Prospect Focus: Caraun Reid and Dan McCullers
Caraun Reid – Defensive Tackle – Princeton
Size – 6021 – 302 – 4.91
Strong Points – Has good size, plays with strength, flashes dominating lower level of competition, defense run, pass rush, effective blocking kicks
Weak Points – Not consistently quick to find the ball, bench press at combine (20 reps), can get tall, raw
2013 Stats - 26 total tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks (20.5 career sacks)
Summation – A rare fifth-year senior at an Ivy League school, he played in the opener in 2010 but was injured and missed the rest of the season. Because of the injury, he was given an injury red-shirt season. He played a key role as a freshman in 2009 and was a starter from 2011 – 2013. In some reports, he is listed as being young for a college senior, but he is already 22 and will turn 23 during his rookie year
Listed at a nose tackle, he also lined up all along the defensive front, getting snaps as a 0, 1, 2, 3 and 5 technique.
Reid has good size and is a good athlete. He plays stronger than he tested. He has very good speed for a big guy (4.91) and can change direction. He has very good balance and is seldom off his feet.
Reid shows very good initial quickness with his quick snap reaction and quick first step. He is able to get penetration to disrupt, but there are times when he loses sight of the ball and is not able to finish. Still, he makes plays and because he is consistently double teamed, he frees things up for other defenders.
Reid is a tough, competitive kid who plays hard every down and will chase the ball in pursuit. With his speed, he has range to the sideline.
As a pass rusher, he gets off the ball quickly and has the power in his lower body to push the pocket. He flashes quick hand use and is able to redirect and use counter moves. He has a good burst coming off blocks to the quarterback. He is a very good tackler both in tight and in the open field.
Reid is an interesting prospect. He has the athleticism to play as a slant nose in a one-gap scheme but also has the frame to carry 350 and play on the nose of as a five-technique in a three-man front. Though he is still raw and will need time to develop, he has a lot of upside. I see him as a mid-round pick who has a chance to be a down-the-road starter.

Dan McCullers – Defensive Tackle – Tennessee
Size – 6067 – 352 – 5.50e
Strong Points – Size, strength, read and react skills, can hold the point
Weak Points – Marginal athlete, no speed, not much in the way of pursuit, no pass rush
2013 Stats – 33 total tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, 1.5 career sacks
Summation – Originally enrolled at Georgia Military College, where he played in 2010 and 2011 and transferred to Tennessee for the 2012 season. He started seven games in 2012 and 12 games in 2013.
He plays defensive tackle in a 4-3 scheme. McCullers is a big body (6067 – 352) but a marginal athlete. He is so big that he has a tendency to stand straight up at the snap, often exposing his body to blockers. He is very strong and tough to move, but he is a limited athlete who lacks good lateral agility, balance, and speed. He can have trouble protecting his legs and gets cut too often.
He has fairly good recognition skills and does a good job occupying blockers. He will get some penetration at times and can be disruptive. There are times when he stays low, sheds quickly, and can make a play in a small area. While he will attempt to chase the ball, he lacks speed and is rarely a factor in pursuit.
As a pass rusher, he can get an occasional push, but that’s it. He lacks any quick twitch and has trouble redirecting. I haven’t seen a burst to the quarterback.
McCullers needs to lose weight and play at about 335. At that weight, he may add some quickness. He has a role as a rotational run stopper. I don’t ever see him being in a game on a passing down. He can hold the point and be a bit disruptive versus the run. He would be best in a 3-5 as a nose or five-technique, but he can also play tackle in some 4-3 two-gap schemes. He looks like a fifth to sixth round pick to me.
