NFL will investigate Kyle Shanahan issue with referees

The NFL has instructed teams that coaches are not to get abusive with replacement referees.

But there was New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick attempting to grab the arm of an official as he jogged off the field Sunday night in Baltimore. Earlier in the day, Washington Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan reportedly went bonkers on officials, drawing a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct in the closing moments of the game and then chasing the officials toward their locker room. Video here on Deadspin shows Shanahan running in the tunnel near the officials. ESPN 980 in Washington reports here some of the profanities Shanahan was dropping on the officials.

According to Mark Maske of the Washington Post, the NFL is investigating to determine if a fine will be handed out.

Shanahan issued a statement through the team on Monday regarding his penalty.

“My emotions got the best of me and I know it’s my responsibility,” he said, according to the Post. “This will never happen again.”

The Redskins had stopped the clock when Robert Griffin III spiked the ball. On the next snap, a false start was called on the team and the officials then ran off the final seven seconds and ruled incorrectly the game should be over. After the confusing dustup, time was put back on the clock but the Redskins were penalized for Shanahan’s unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

“When I overheard the official tell the head coach that the game was over after the false start penalty, I tried to explain that the game was not over,” Shanahan said in the statement. “That is what resulted in the unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. I tried to get an explanation of how I could get that penalty when half of the other team was on the field as well.

“I was frustrated, and in the process of trying to get some answers from the officials, I conducted myself in the wrong way.”

We’ll see what direction this heads. The NFL doesn’t want replacement referees abused but they’ve been making shaky calls.
