NFLPA fines, suspends Dumervil's former agent

The NFL Players Association fined and suspended Marty Magid, the former agent for Pro Bowl outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil.

Dumervil played for the Denver Broncos and was represented by Magid until the team cut the star pass rusher after a blown deadline on a restructured contract.

The NFLPA announced that Magid is suspended for six months and fined $25,000.

"After investigation, [Committee on Agent Regulation and Discipline] determined that the negligence of Magid, former certified contractor advisor for Elvis Dumervil, contributed to the events that led to the Denver Broncos’ release of Dumervil in March 2013," the players' union said in a statement.

Magid plans to appeal the discipline to an arbitrator.

"Discipline of Magid does not foreclose action the NFLPA may take against the NFL club for its conduct, which may have violated the collective bargaining agreement and Dumervil’s rights under the CBA," the NFLPA stated.

Magid's lawyer, David Cornwell, expressed confidence that the punishment won't stand.

"The NFLPA's imposition of discipline is ill-advised and its announcement of discipline before Marty exhausts his appeal rights is indefensible," Cornwell said in a statement. "The NFLPA knows discipline is stayed pending the appeal and trying to circumvent the appeal process with a premature announcement of discipline is unconscionable. Marty will appeal. Marty will win. The discipline will not stand.

"The NFLPA made general and unsupportable assertions of negligence against Marty and then ignored or created facts to support its disciplinary decision. Marty represented Elvis Dumervil's interests effectively and consistent with the standards imposed on him by the NFLPA's agent regulations. We are confident our arbitrator will agree."

Dumervil signed a five-year, $26 million contract with the Baltimore Ravens after being released by Denver and has recorded 5 1/2 sacks through seven games.
