NFLPA to host a college all-star game

The NFLPA is jumping into the college all-star game business.

<p> The players association informed agents today that the NFLPA has reached an agreement with Overtime Sports Southeast to host the NFLPA College All-Star game on Feb. 5 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Although it has not been confirmed, one source said he believes the game will take the place of the Texas vs. The Nation All-Star Game that had grown in popularity with NFL teams. The El Paso (Texas) Times reported on July 23 that the city council was likely to end funding for that venture.

The new all-star game will provide an opportunity for current and former players to be involved in coaching and mentoring draft prospects.

“We always thought he PA should be in that game, the college all-star game business,” one veteran agent said. “It’s an entity that will have some clout with NFL draft prospects, more so than the East-West game. Maybe it’s not to the level of the Senior Bowl, yet. But you start getting some ex-players, when they’re done, like Kevin Mawae calling kids up, `Hey, you gotta come to this game.’

"I think it’s a smart move by the players union, a very smart move.”

The game will be open to draft eligible players for the 2011 draft who are three years removed from their high school graduation class.

It may take some time to make an impact on the Senior Bowl, but there is no disputing this is a well-timed and prudent move by the NFLPA.
