NFL's rookie symposium a victim of lockout

The NFL has cancelled the rookie symposium that was scheduled for next month, a sign perhaps the league doesn’t see an end to the labor battle in the near future.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the program, which was to begin June 26 in Canton, Ohio, will be called off. It was the first time the event was scheduled to be held at the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It is mandatory for all 254 draft picks to attend the event where they get information on some of the dangers of professional football. Lessons on money management are given.

"It's unfortunate that a league that claims to care so much about its players has chosen to eliminate an event that is truly beneficial to incoming rookies," NFL agent Steve Caric told National Football Post's Aaron Wilson.

Now, those following the league will wait for the June 3 court hearing in St. Louis by the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals. Of course, a ruling could take several weeks. One of the next events to be cancelled could be the Hall of Fame Game. The Chicago Bears and St. Louis Rams are scheduled to play in Canton Aug. 7.
