NFP Friday Buzz

*Some front office men are wondering if Panthers owner Jerry Richardson isn’t positioning himself to hire a general manager-head coach tandem of Omar Khan and Bill Cowher in the offseason. Cowher lives near Charlotte and would give the Panthers fan credibility, which they need. He and Khan worked together in Pittsburgh and would be a good match. The last time Richardson hired a general manager, he hired Marty Hurney, who had a background in administration and contracts. Khan has a similar background as the Steelers director of football and business administration, and likely would get a ringing endorsement from the Rooney family.

*No one expects for the earth to shake before the trading deadline on Tuesday, but there has been talk about three big name players being moved: Steven Jackson, Dwayne Bowe and Michael Jenkins. The Rams are believed to want to play young running backs Daryl Richardson and Isaiah Pead, and would like to rid themselves of Jackson’s contract. The asking price probably won’t be high, but they still might not be able to find a buyer. Bowe also could be difficult to move, given that his contract expires after the season. The Cowboys are 3-3 heading into their game against the Giants, and might find it difficult to justify unloading Jenkins if they win even though he hasn’t been playing much.

*Two men who are getting some buzz as potential head coach candidates are 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman and Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy. Both have been noticed for their use of personnel, game plans and player development. 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh will help Roman. As for McCoy, he found a way to get the most out of Tim Tebow and a “declining” Peyton Manning.

*Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is more sensitive and fragile than many realize, according to those in the know. The coaching staff has to treat him carefully and make sure he knows they believe in him so his confidence is not adversely affected. That’s why the presence of Tebow is a potential problem in the Jets locker room.

*Front office men have remarked about what a big loss Sean Lee will be for the Cowboys. One said he thought Lee was playing as well as any inside linebacker in the game. Lee has become more confident, and as a result has played more aggressively this year.

*Even though Jerry Jones has plenty of responsibilities with his new stadium, the Cowboys owner remains heavily involved in personnel moves and the coaching staff. Some former Cowboys employees think the team would be better served if Jones were more involved with the business side of the team and less involved with the football side of it.
