No surprise that Drew Brees is 'confident' a deal will be done

Here is some New Orleans Saints news that takes us closer to the gridiron and distances us from the courtroom.

Drew Brees remains optimistic a long-term deal will be done before the deadline at 4 p.m. Monday. Raise your hand if you have heard this before.

I'm an eternal optimist, so I'm still very confident a deal will get done by Monday,” Brees said from the ESPY’s on Wednesday night, according to Ryan Jones of the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Right now, it looks like things will go from bad to worse for the Saints if they don’t have a deal in place for Brees. There is a strong possibility that absent a contract he accepts, he won’t sign the franchise tag tender and therefore will not show up for training camp. In an offseason gone wrong in nearly every imaginable (and some not so imaginable) way, the club needs the quarterback.

“I think I've been around this league long enough to understand how this works at times,” Brees said. “In a lot of cases, it does go down to the wire, and you need a stopping point in order to bring everyone together and make sure it can get done. That stopping point is Monday, so let's hope we get something done by then."

Reports have indicated little to no progress between the club and Brees’ representatives in more than a month. It doesn’t take that long for a deal to come together. Chances are we’ll be headed to the wire on Monday with this one.
