O.J. Atogwe jumps into free agency with visit to Redskins

With the clock ticking for recently cut players like O.J. Atogwe to sign a contract before a potential work stoppage, the former St. Louis Ram isn’t wasting any time.

Atogwe will visit the Washington Redskins today, according to Howard Balzer of ESPN 101 in St. Louis. Atogwe was released on Friday as he was due to earn more than $11 million in 2011.

It’s easy to connect the dots to the Redskins. Jim Haslett, the defensive coordinator in Washington, held the same position with the Rams from 2006 to 2008.

“My agent has been talking to a few teams and we have discussed the possibility of going to different places,” Atogwe told Balzer. “I’ll meet with (the Redskins) and see what’s up.”

The Buffalo Bills are also reported to have interest in Atogwe, who has drawing quick attention on the market like Bob Sanders, who was released by the Indianapolis Colts on Friday too in a purging of big-name safeties. It will be interesting to see what the next move is for Atogwe. LaRon Landry has excelled playing in the box for the Redskins and Atogwe is best in center field. Washington could potentially have a nice combination with the two. But would the arrival of Atogwe signal an eventual exit for Landry, who is entering the final year of his contract? It would be unusual to see a team invest big money in two safeties.
