Osi Umenyiora rolling without an agent right now

Osi Umenyiora is flying solo now in his bid to get a contract extension from the New York Giants.

The defensive end has fired longtime and respected agent Tony Agnone. Liz Mullen of Sports Business Journal first reported the parting. Umenyiora does not have a representative at this point.

Fired is too harsh a word,” Umenyiora wrote in an email to Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger. “I just came to the conclusion that this situation I don't think he can help me with.”

Per Garafolo, it is the second time Umenyiora has axed Agnone. He’s rehired him once before but there is no telling if that will happen again.

“I have no agent currently, and I'm not really looking for one,” Umenyiora wrote.

Umenyiora is entering the final year of his contract. He is due to earn $3.925 million this season. At times, he’s said he’s not going to be a distraction and deal with it. At other times, he’s barked about the situation. It’s impossible to say what direction this will take with training camp a little less than two months off.

The Giants want him and they’re not going to give him away. Even if Umenyiora can engineer a trade, it’s unlikely he’ll command top dollar. Stay tuned.
