Out with broken neck, Ron Bartell intends to play in 2012
The St. Louis Rams received the rough news they’ve been bracing for as the team learned cornerback Ron Bartell will miss the remainder of the season with a fractured bone in his neck.
Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Bartell hopes to continue his career with the team in 2012 even though some have wondered if it would be a career-ending injury.
"My goal is to play again," Bartell told Thomas today. "I'm fully prepared to play again. I'm approaching it as such that I will play again."
The C7 bone in his neck has two fractures, injuries suffered while trying to make a tackle in Sunday’s season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles at the Edward Jones Dome. It was the worst of a handful of injuries the Rams had in the game.
Bartell will not require surgery but he will have to wear a brace and then he’ll need a long rehabilitation process.
“It’s stable,” he told Thomas. “It's an injury that can heal over time. And everything I'm hearing it doesn't prevent me from playing in the future."
