Packers hire Alex Van Pelt as running backs coach

About a month after losing Joe Philbin to the Miami Dolphins, Mike McCarthy has finished shuffling his coaching staff.

The Green Bay Packers announced this morning that Alex Van Pelt, the longtime NFL quarterback, has been hired as the team’s running backs coach.

In the shuffle, quarterbacks coach Tom Clements was promoted to offensive coordinator. Tight ends coach Ben McAdoo moved to quarterbacks coach and running backs Jerry Fontenot is now the tight ends coach.

The newcomer to the bunch is Van Pelt, who was the quarterbacks coach the past two seasons for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Van Pelt was considered for jobs in Chicago and St. Louis, according to league sources.

McCarthy was a coach at Pittsburgh when McCarthy played there in college so the two have ties.
