Palko will start for Chiefs Sunday night
Tyler Palko will make one more lame-duck start for the Kansas City Chiefs before newly acquired Kyle Orton take the reins the following week.
Orton, claimed off waivers from Denver on Wednesday, won't arrive until today, which is not enough time to get him even close to up to speed in the offense to play Sunday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to Adam Teicher of the Kansas City Star.
That means, ironically enough, that Orton's first start for the Chiefs should come the following week against the Chicago Bears, whose interest in him was supposedly part of the reason Orton and his agent coaxed the Broncos into releasing him in the first place. The Bears have lost Jay Cutler to a broken thumb, but it was the Chiefs, who had priority in the waiver claim order, and grabbed Orton.
“It was kind of a no-brainer for us with the situation we were in, first and foremost from a depth standpoint,” coach Todd Haley said. “Once the decision was made that Matt (Cassel) was going to be lost for the season, there was no other option as far as we could see.”
