Panthers push out CB Chris Gamble

The Carolina Panthers finally got around to making a move most have expected for some time as veteran Chris Gamble has been released.

Gamble spent nine seasons with the Panthers and was going to carry a salary-cap figure of $7.9 million in 2013. The move puts the Panthers about $4 million below the salary cap, according to Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer.

Gamble, 29, has been Carolina’s top cornerback and he missed 12 games this past season following shoulder surgery. He holds the franchise record with 27 interceptions and performed well since being a first-round draft pick in 2004.

Gamble should be able to help some team this season. There is a deep crop of cornerbacks in the draft so it could take him some time to find work or get a deal that he is comfortable with for this season.

“I appreciate the contributions of Chris during my first two years as head coach and to the organization for many years,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said in a statement provided by the club. “He always handled things the right way and we wish him the best.”
