Panthers receive top compensatory pick, NFL-high 3
The team with the No. 1 pick in the draft also owns the top compensatory draft pick.
The Carolina Panthers were awarded a league-high three compensatory draft picks today, including the first one at the end of the third round – No. 97 overall. The Panthers also received picks in the sixth and seventh rounds.
The league distributed a total of 32 additional picks to 23 teams.
The Tennessee Titans gained two compensatory picks – one in the fourth round and one in the seventh. The Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers also gained a fourth-round pick. Baltimore, Minnesota, Philadelphia, San Diego, San Francisco and the New York Giants all got two picks. Both picks for the Ravens come at the end of the fifth round.
Compensatory draft picks are distributed using a secret formula. The number of picks a team receives is based on the net loss of compensatory free agents. With the Panthers losing defensive end Julius Peppers via free agency to the Chicago Bears a year ago, that put them in line for the top pick. No team can receive more than four compensatory picks.
