Panthers starters should play two series tonight
The Pittsburgh Steelers will turn to Charlie Batch at quarterback tonight for the final warmup before the regular season.
The Carolina Panthers, with their new coaching staff, are going to take a different approach. According to the Charlotte Observer, the Panthers will play their starters about two series in the game to get them a little more work. It wouldn’t surprise anyone if a host of Steelers defensive starters are also sidelined.
“We'd like to see things function where things are going well, we're communicating, we're doing the things we're supposed to. That's the biggest thing we want to take from it," Panthers first-year coach Ron Rivera said.
"I'm not concerned about the outcome, obviously. I'm concerned about the way we play more than anything else. I want to see good communication, I want to see good operations and then get them off the field."
So, Cam Newton will get a little bit of work and then Jimmy Clausen will get a lot of work as Carolina tries to slowly progress in its system. Right tackle Jeff Otah and defensive end Greg Hardy, who missed the first three preseason games, will make appearances.
