Parcells regrets the way he left New England

Bill Parcells, who is scheduled to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August, tells USA Today that he has one regret in his coaching career.

Parcells didn't like the way things ended between himself and the New England Patriots in 1996.

"I regret leaving New England. Had we done things differently ... " Parcells said. "I had a good young team there. I hated to leave that team, because I knew what we could do.

"I was absolutely too headstrong. And he might have been a little headstrong, too. I think both Kraft and myself, retrospectively, would have done things a little differently."

Parcells, who won two championships as coach of the New York Giants, guided the Patriots to a Super Bowl appearance in 1996, one where New England lost to the Green Bay Packers. After leaving the Patriots, he later coached the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys, but never reached another Super Bowl.

Parcells said he and Patriots owner Robert Kraft eventually made peace in the matter, which stemmed from the coach not having final say over the roster.

It also spawned the famous quote from Parcells, "If they want you to cook the dinner, at least they ought to let you shop for some of the groceries."

Parcells was succeeded in New England by Pete Carroll, who was then replaced by another former Parcells disciple in Bill Belichick, who has coach the Patriots to three Super Bowl championships.
