Pats' Gronkowski wins celeb HR derby

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski emerged as the winner of a celebrity home run derby in his native Buffalo Monday night, says the Metro of Western New York.

Gronkowski popped 13 home runs in the two rounds to edge out Buffalo Bills CEO Russ Brandon, who is a former college baseball player. Gronkowski said he got excited and nervous about hitting in the contest, which is part of the Triple-A All-Star Game festivities being hosted by the Buffalo Bisons.

“It was a little nerve-wracking going out there,” Gronkowski admitted. “My heart was beating fast, it kind of felt like playing a football game.”

Others competing in the event included Hall of Fame QB Jim Kelly, current Bills running back Fred Jackson, Hall of Fame offensive lineman Joe DeLamielleure, former Bills general manager Bill Polian, Sabres coach Lindy Ruff, Sabres winger Patrick Kaleta and Hollywood screenwriter Nick Bakay, who is a native of Buffalo.
