Price was right for Seahawks with Matt Flynn

The Seattle Seahawks got the price tag right.

That much is certain.

It’s always risky business signing away a young, backup quarterback and banking on him to develop into a productive starter. It’s worked out real well for the Houston Texans with Matt Schaub. The Kansas City Chiefs got a guy who was proven for one year in Matt Cassel. After one year, the jury is still out on Kevin Kolb in Arizona. But Kolb received $26.5 million guaranteed in a deal from the Cardinals. The Seahawks have guaranteed Matt Flynn $10 million.

That is the beauty of the deal as Jerry Brewer of the Seattle Times sees it. And he’s right. Seahawks general manager John Schneider knows Flynn well. He was with the Green Bay Packers when they drafted Flynn. But we’ve only seen him play sparingly. He’s 26 years old and he’s thrown 132 passes in the NFL.

It’s a risk for the Seahawks but they needed to do something at the position. The three-year deal, with a maximum value of $26 million, allows Flynn to get back to the negotiating table in a short period of time if he takes off. That is what Seattle coach Pete Carroll is hoping for, no doubt.

The Seahawks just might have gotten the best quarterback with a healthy neck they could without having to pay an arm and a leg.
