Raiders acquire Carson Palmer

The Oakland Raiders, desperate for a quarterback after Jason Campbell's injury, have acquired Carson Palmer from the Cincinnati Bengals in exchange for two draft picks, including their 2012 first-rounder , according to Adam Schefter of ESPN after various reports had said a deal was close.

Palmer, who had demanded a trade from the Bengals in the off-season only to be rebuffed by owner Mike Brown, retired from the league rather than report to Cincinnati when training camp opened.

But when the Raiders lost Campbell to a broken collarbone in Sunday's win over Cleveland, it left Oakland (4-2) in desperate need of a quarterback. The Raiders targeted Palmer, who is familiar with Oakland coach Hue Jackson, a former Bengals assistant coach.

And while Brown had steadfastly refused to discuss Palmer and the possibility of trading him, the Raiders' offer of a first-round pick next year and a conditional pick that could become another first-round choice in 2013, was simply too good to pass up.

Meanwhile, the deal virtually bankrupts the Raiders in next April's draft as the team does not have picks in any of the first four rounds now and gave their seventh rounder to Seattle for Aaron Curry last week.
