Rams create needed cap room with Chris Long restructure

The St. Louis Rams were snug up against the salary cap until they created significant room with a restructure of defensive end Chris Long’s contract.

According to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Rams freed up $4.5 million in room on Friday when they moved some money around in Long’s big deal. Per Thomas, Long was scheduled to earn $13.25 million in base salary, all of it guaranteed, this season. Instead, the Rams took $6 million from that amount and made it into a pro-rated bonus. That spreads $4.5 million out over the next three seasons to create the space, lowering Long’s cap number to $8.75 million this season.

Something had to be done because after free-agent splashes for the offense – the Rams added tight end Jared Cook and left tackle Jake Long – St. Louis had less than $250,000 in cap room.

The Rams put the room to use by officially signing offensive lineman Chris Williams. We'll see what else St. Louis has in mind moving forward.
