Rams discover they've got a solid back in Cadillac Williams

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had real concern about how they would react without a dependable back like Cadillac Williams to lean on.

Their loss has been an immediate gain for the St. Louis Rams, who might be seeing more of Williams than they would like. Rams running back Steven Jackson suffered a quad injury in Sunday’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles at the Edward Jones Dome. He totaled 140 yards offense with 91 yards rushing coming on 19 carries.

"That's not easy, to come in early in a game like that when Jack does down and (Williams is) asked to play as many snaps as he did," quarterback Sam Bradford said, according to Bill Coats of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "But I thought he did a great job. He ran hard, he had a great presence in the huddle, and I think the guys really kind of fed off him when he did come in there.”

What made Williams so valuable in Tampa Bay, even as rookie LeGarrette Blount emerged last season, was his ability to play on all three downs. He turned into a very effective third-down back and there’s real value in that. It’s how the Rams viewed him, as well, but for the time being his role could be expanding.

"Good move by Billy (Devaney, general manager) and his staff," Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo said. "Cadillac has been great since he got in here from the standpoint of being a team player and knowing his role and knowing what he had to do. He stepped right in there, and we didn't skip a beat."
