Rams "early in the stage" with Brian Westbrook
Popular thinking had been that Brian Westbrook would land with a coach that he had played under before.
The Minnesota Vikings, before drafting Stanford running back Toby Gerhart, were looking for someone to pair with Adrian Peterson. Head coach Brad Childress obviously knows Westbrook well from his days with the Philadelphia Eagles. He never said no to Westbrook, but you can effectively rule him out now.
Well, another coach familiar with Westbrook has taken action. The free-agent running back took a physical on Sunday for the St. Louis Rams, and he could reunite with Steve Spagnuolo there, another ex-Eagles assistant.
“We’ll see where it goes from there,” Spagnuolo said. “It's way, way early in the stage.”
The Rams, who have a host of needs, did not select a running back in the draft to pair with workhorse Steven Jackson. They did, however, sign a pair of free agents after it ended – Oklahoma State’s Keith Toston and Idaho’s DeMaundray Woolridge.
