Rams have deep need for help at wide receiver

Danny Amendola, the best wide receiver for the St. Louis Rams, is set to become an unrestricted free agent.

The position is in need of serious help even if Amendola does return and that was made even more clear when the Rams bounced troubled wideout Titus Young on Friday, 10 days after claiming him on waivers from the Detroit Lions.

Rams coach Jeff Fisher said the club was extensive in evaluating Young after claiming him, according to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

“We spent probably four or five days with him and as an organization – at the end of the interview process, let’s call it – we decided it was best for us to go a different direction,” Fisher said. “We just felt that he was not the best option for us at that position. He’s an outstanding young talent and we’re gonna wish him well.”

The Lions, of course, dumped the 2011 second-round pick after a series of behavioral issues. As desperate as the Rams are for help at wide receiver, they didn’t want to risk encountering issues with Young will trying to see how talented he can be.

“We went into detail,” Fisher said of the interview process. “We felt like we’ve got a good, young group (at wide receiver), and we feel like perhaps Titus is better suited for another organization.”

Brandon Gibson is also scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent and behind him and Amendola the Rams have Austin Pettis, Chris Givens and Brian Quick under contract. If St. Louis wants to tap into quarterback Sam Bradford’s ability and truly develop him, it is going to have to provide him with more capable talent at the position.
