Rams send second overall pick Jason Smith to bench
The St. Louis Rams made a high-priced decision on Sunday when right tackle Jason Smith was benched in a blowout loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
Smith, the second pick in the 2009 draft, was replaced by Adam Goldberg in the fourth quarter. His biggest mistake, according to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, was getting called for an unnecessary roughness penalty in the second quarter when he got in a shoving match with the team trailing 21-0.
“(Smith) had a tough day," Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo said. "Sometimes that happens, so you try to help your player a little bit. We've got other guys that can go in there, so that's what we did.”
The Rams could take a penalty from time to time from Smith if he was giving them top play. He hasn’t been. As Andrew Brandt of the National Football Post pointed out, Smith got $33 million guaranteed in his $62 million deal. He’s making $8.5 million this season.
