Redskins get good news on pair of defensive starters

The Washington Redskins dodged a bullet. Make that two of them.

The team’s defense looked like it suffered two potentially serious injuries on Saturday night in preseason action at Soldier Field against the Chicago Bears. But Mark Maske of the Washington Post reports that a left shoulder injury for outside linebacker Brian Orakpo and a left knee injury for strong safety Brandon Meriweather are not serious.

Orakpo’s agent Ben Dogra told Maske that the injury was “nothing serious at all” and the pass rusher should be ready for the start of the regular season Sept. 9. Orakpo was injured trying to arm tackle Devin Hester in the open field after he dropped into coverage. He looked to be in significant pain at the time.

Meriweather underwent an MRI on his knee, injured when he got toppled under Bears right tackle Gabe Carimi, and it showed no serious damage. So, while there is no timetable for a specific return, both starters should be OK moving forward.
