Redskins get safety help, sign Tyrone Carter

The Washington Redskins are going to be without safety Kareem Moore for at least the foreseeable future, and they’re not wasting anytime looking for help.

The team signed 11-year veteran Tyrone Carter to provide some help in the secondary, a league source said. Carter spent the previous six seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, winning two Super Bowl rings. He has not missed a game since 2004.

<p> The 5-9, 195-pound Carter should be able to pick up the concepts of Jim Haslett’s defense quickly considering the Redskins are basing much of what they are doing defensively on the schemes in Pittsburgh. Washington’s linebackers coach Lou Spanos knows Carter well having come over from the Steelers himself.

The 34-year-old Carter was named the AFC defensive player of the week last season when he made two interceptions in a victory over the Denver Broncos.

Moore suffered what was believed to be a sprained MCL in his right knee Saturday night in the Redskins’ loss to the Baltimore Ravens at FedEx Field. He was injured without contact pursuing the ball carrier on a fake punt. Moore was reportedly going to have an MRI on his knee Sunday. Whether or not arthroscopic surgery is needed for Moore is not known.
