Redskins sign Josh Bidwell
The Washington Redskins signed punter Josh Bidwell to a contract this morning, effectively ending the run of veteran Hunter Smith with the team.
Bidwell, an 11-year veteran, spent the last six seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and was a Pro Bowl performer in 2005. But a hip injury forced the 34-year-old to miss the entire 2009 season. The Bucs released him at the start of the month. Obviously, Redskins general manager Bruce Allen is very familiar with Bidwell, having brought him in to Tampa Bay, so there is a comfort level there.
The Redskins need to improve on special teams under the new regime. Too often in the past the club has had thin drafts and that has limited the ability of the team to generate much depth, especially at positions critical to building a solid special teams unit.
