Relationship with GM made trade easy for Asante Samuel

The Philadelphia Eagles wanted a second-round draft pick to trade Asante Samuel last summer.

Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff, who was the college scouting director in New England when the Patriots selected the cornerback in the fourth round of the 2003 draft, wanted the player. But not at that price tag.

When the asking price dropped dramatically, the Falcons took action, acquiring Samuel on Wednesday for a seventh-round draft pick. Samuel re-worked his contract to make the deal happen and now all sides appear happy.

I’m happy to be a Falcon,” Samuel told D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I know the city is embracing me. I’m excited. I know the Falcons already have an excellent team, excellent coaches, schemes and talent. I’m just going to add to (that and) try to get to the one common goal.”

Samuel said he chatted with Dimitroff every time he played against his team and the relationship they had made the deal comfortable for him. Now, it’s a matter of figuring out exactly how he fits in with Dunta Robinson and Brent Grimes in place.

“Asante has established himself as a very productive player during his career,” Dimitroff said. “He is a proven player in this league, and we feel that this move upgrades the talent of our roster.”
