Report: 49ers narrow GM search to two candidates

The San Francisco 49ers have moved closer to hiring a general manager as team president Jed York has narrowed his focus to two candidates.

According to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, the choice will be made between Trent Baalke, a veteran personnel man for the team, and Mike Lombardi, the former contributor and founder of the National Football Post. A decision could come as soon as tonight or on Wednesday, per the report.

Baalke has been considered the frontrunner from the beginning of the process. Lombardi, who now works for NFL Network, has reportedly impressed and some reports indicate that Lombardi could bring Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh with him. The Niners are expected to allow the new GM to hire the club’s next coach.

Interestingly though, the Niners have requested permission to interview Oakland Raiders offensive coordinator Hue Jackson and New York Giants coach Perry Fewell. Stay tuned.
