Report: 49ers will release David Akers

The San Francisco 49ers are expected to part ways with kicker David Akers prior to the start of the new league year on March 12.

Adam Caplan reports that the Niners will cut ties with Akers after a season in which he struggled and was nearly replaced in the postseason. Akers is on the books for $3 million for 2013 so the club will look to save some money at the position.

Akers missed 13 of 42 kicks this past season but was terrific in 2011 when he scored a league-high 166 points. San Francisco signed veteran Billy Cundiff as cover at the start of the postseason before ultimately releasing him.

Akers had surgery early last offseason and was not 100 percent during the year. He remains strong on kickoffs and at 38 he should be in position to find work elsewhere but probably not for $3 million.
