Report: Branden Albert likely to take physical for Dolphins

“Extensive talks” between the Miami and Kansas City could land the Dolphins a new left tackle before the draft next week.

Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports the Dolphins are expected to give Branden Albert a physical before a trade with the Chiefs is finalized. Kansas City has been offering Albert for what reports say is a high second-round pick as the Chiefs look to recoup a selection for the one they used in a trade for quarterback Alex Smith. A deal between the clubs is not done, but everything is moving in the right direction.

The Chiefs placed the franchise tag on Albert and are likely selecting a left tackle with the No. 1 overall pick next week. Albert wants to remain at left tackle and not make the move to the right side and the Dolphins have a need after Jake Long departed via free agency for the St. Louis Rams. To get a deal done, the Dolphins would also have to work out a contract extension with Albert.

The Dolphins hold two picks in the second round – No. 42 overall and No. 54, the second of which came from the Indianapolis Colts. They would likely have to use one of those to obtain Albert. That would leave general manager Jeff Ireland with the 12th overall pick in the first round.
